Her characters are always fleshed out and well-rounded and the chemistry between the characters is always well developed without being over the top. This book is easily read as a stand alone. There is usually a character connected to previous books, but it is not necessary to read previous books to try and catch up. There's quite a bit of questioning this person and that one, a little suspense here and there but then it slows down to a lot of new relationship drama. And a shallow plot. - 4.0 out of 5 stars from AvidReader -- Fast-paced, fun romantic suspense by one of the best! : Laura Griffin has always been one of my insta-buy authors and this book is a perfect reason why. This is a fun, fast-paced, romantic suspense novel that’s classic LG. At the center of the story is a smart, sassy heroine who meets an alpha-but-sweet hero while the pair are trying to solve a crime. The mystery has lots of twists and turns — as often as not I’m as surprised as the H/h with LG stories. There are always lots of secondary characters, so well developed they could each have their own stories. The setting is as always a Texas city or town (here, Austin) with the focus primarily on characters connected with law enforcement, CSI/evidence processers, and attorneys/court. Here, an Austin PD detective trying to solve a missing persons case that may be a murder encounters a feisty, beautiful attorney who may or may not have info about his victim but is irritatingly closed mouthed about it. The relationship between the couple evolves despite the need for the pair to keep their distance, so there’s a smoldering slow burn that occasionally gets totally and entertainingly out of hand. The mystery, a weakness for many romance authors, is well plotted and told. LG’s best known for the Tracers series which revolves around a world famous forensic lab in Texas. This book is not part of the Tracers series but shares a lot of thematic similarities. I miss the Tracers series characters tho and hope there are future Tracers books. In the meantime, this series is an engaging and fun way to get our LG fix while we wait. I enjoyed this so much I read it in one night (thanks for keeping me up late on a work night, LG!). I will say it tapered off for me about halfway through, and then she hits you with the unexpected and you are right back in. It’s suspense and mystery, mixed with some romance. Grab this one. Texas detectives are at the seen of a crime they believe happened to Vanessa Adams. With blood found in the wooded area they feel it is only a matter of time before her body is found.
